My Memphis Wrestling experience at Game6 Grizzlies and the RSWF [Real South Wrestling Federation]

<< crossposted on the '30 Home Games' blog

Whenever I travel, I search for my 3 loves of basketball, wrestling and comedy. I've found them with varying success around the world but have had an easier time on my #30HomeGames mission as they typify Americana.

My ongoing collection of Wrestling Grizzlies graphics
Part of the reason why the Memphis Grizzlies are my favourite team is their reverence of pro-wrestling. America's Mid-South has a great wrestling tradition and the Grizzlies honour that with themed wrestling nights. Their mascot 'Grizz' incorporates wrasslin into his shtick with the use of ladders and championship belts. Local wrestling icon, Jerry "The King" Lawler periodically appears at games to inject excitement into the crowd.
During game 6 of the Grizzlies game, former WCW superstar Buff Bagwell was curiously in the front row. Interviewed during a timeout, he revealed that he was in attendance to support the San Antonio Spurs. Perplexed at first, I immediately marked out as it signalled that Jerry Lawler was just around the corner to challenge him. They worked a program over the course of the game. Buff Bagwell with the upper hand at first, parading around the hallways and arena stage over several play stoppages until he got his comeuppance. Lawler setting up Grizz the mascot as he delivered a top-of-the-ladder splash onto Bagwell's surrogate who was splayed on a table. The experience was bittersweet as the Grizzlies couldn't match that script, coming up short against the Spurs. The fact Memphians entertain such absurd theatre makes them my kind of people.

Real South Wrestling Federation: Memphis' only weekly pro-wrestling show!
I was looking forward to experiencing wrestling in one of its traditional home's of Memphis. RSWF (Real South Wrestling Federation) is the biggest of the remaining federations in the "Blues City". They host weekly Saturday night main events which I was excited to catch while I was over there. My last night stateside would be at RSWF. Despite competing with WWE NXT in town for that evening, the performers and loyal crowd put on a spectacular go home show. Had the Grizzlies staved off elimination and forced a Game 7, I would've been torn but there's no way I was going to miss this.

One half of Tag Team 'Full Deck' taunting the RSWF faithful
RSWF founder, Soultaker plucked me from the crowd before the show to introduce himself. He'd been expecting me as I'd expressed that I was coming from Australia to watch Memphis wrestling. He gifted me with a goodie bag that included his patented mask previously cracked by Jerry Lawler himself. It was a humbling display of southern hospitality and grassroots outreach, evident with the sense of community and camaraderie in the arena. When wrestling is at its best.
Stash of wrestling goodies from Memphis:
'Memphis Heat' vinyl from the Flashback store and
a gift bag of memorabilia from Soultaker.
The show was a blast, an excited crowd of adults and children really making their presence felt. From the constant taunting to the raucous lumberjack match where paying attendees were encouraged to "interact" with the combatants as they spilled outside the ring. The audience of lumberjacks each given leather straps so the performers felt the love. The night didn't end there. After the show, Soultaker invited me backstage to meet the wrestlers. Several photos were taken with skinny ol' me posing between the champions and their belts.

A post shared by Loz In Transit (@30homegames) on

Of the NBA cities visited, I've found Memphis' public transport the least sufficient which is no mean feat. You're effectively obligated to use Uber to travel affordably. I'd Ubered to the show but didn't have wi-fi at the venue to hail a ride home. I ended up getting a lift with some wrestlers back to my hostel, riding with the tag team of 'Pure Power' who main-evented the evening. I would find out that V-man's kids who shared the backseat with me were students at Treadwell, Penny Hardaway's high school. I'd visited the Memphis Tigers' college campus the day previous and would've explored Treadwell had I discovered the connection earlier.

The Game 6 and RSWF wrestling nights were indicative of the good fortune and welcome I had in Memphis and Atlanta. I would cross paths with WWE star Tye Dillinger on my transit home, a fitting end as my road trip south was a "Perfect 10".

'30 Home Games' on Instagram: Basketball Souvenirs, Streetball and Hoops around the world

<< crossposted on the '30 Home Games' blog
Jacques Henri Lartigue: Why I'm getting a camera
I was steadfast (stubborn) in not getting a camera as I had enjoyed the manufactured dynamic when I told people I was without one. I was happy with other people's photos, it became an experiment. It allowed me to live in the moment, any photos of me were candids or documented outside myself.
Many of my basketball experiences during my travels haven't been captured in Photos. I only got my first Smartphone 3 months ago (Shoutout to SP*) and only had a camera for a quarter of my time during Europe 2011 and South America 2013.

The main goal of this blog is to have lived experiences, writing about it has been a good way to capture the memories and encouraged me to find more. Often times however it's been without Photographs. I don't have any Courtside shots of the games I watched in Caracas (FIBA Americas) or the during the NBA lockout period that made my time in Lithuania (EuroBasket 2011) so star-studded. Whilst they were fun, my interests are more in personal interactions than celebrity-spotting. I value experiences had outside the arena, often through the prism of basketball but ideally as a participant rather than a spectator.

Some moments only gain stature in my mind due to lack of documentation. I befriended an Amsterdam local at a HipHop bar because of his Amar'e Stoudemire 'Stat NY' shirt. With his recommendation, I took a 30min busride to Amsterdam-Noord for some pickup games which immediately got rained out. Play carried on, a mixed full court game in the wet gray. A moment that has stuck with me for its surrealness.

The last few months up I've set up a '30 Home Games' Instagram to house the photos I do have. Below are a few samples of the types of Photos, Graphics and Hashtags to look out for. A few are crossposted on my my other platforms - The 30HG Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr.

World Cup inspired Photo Triggers: Europe 2011 and South America 2013

It's a fortnight into the World Cup and half of the Group stages have already been decided. Admittedly I'm not a big Football fan (the Basketball World Cup will be my International Sporting highlight for 2014) but no other event brings as much International festivity as the FIFA World Cup every 4 years.

During the last World Cup in 2010, Sydney erected a large TV Screen that emerged from the Darling Harbour wharf. After nightshift finished, I'd brave the cold and watch a 5am Football match flanked by International supporters. After my first Live site match I remember thinking "I didn't know we had that many Mexicans and French in Sydney". This wouldn't be the last time I'd be impressed by the foreign representation in Sydney as International students, expats and travelers emerged to support their National Teams. I watched the World Cup Final between Holland and Spain after reuniting with a Dutch friend I made in Adelaide at her hostel. This predated my first international backpacking adventure and the German connections I made that night kicked off the type of networks that would serve me well in my 2011 EuroTrip. Those friendships also made my 2010 memorable as I developed a solid running mates for my 'Yes Man' year in Sydney.

Since that last World Cup I traveled Europe for 13 months and South America for 6. During this Month of Football, the sight of flags and languages that remind me of those awesome experiences is heartening. A lot of my favorites for the World Cup are due to the positive associations with certain Countries. Of course I also got some tips during my recent South America trip about the best bets for the Mundial de Futbol.

Below are a selection of Trigger photos of the memorable times and friends made at Countries represented in the 2014 FIFA World Cup:
Portugal (May 2011)

In case you're wondering here are my World Cup Tips:
- I always bet for Team USA and against England. It's worked a treat the last 3 World Cups.
- Chilombuay! I had Uruguay beating Brazil whenever they faced. As it shakes out I feel Chile might have the honors. Colombia has been the most fun whilst Uruguay has been gutsy, Colombia should move on.
- Netherlands and Germany are the obvious European representatives to go deep.
- Colombia, Netherlands at the end on the  wish of a goalfest Final

Sydney Underground, Bunker parties and secret spots

When on the road we have a tendency to go more extreme with our exploration. Arriving with fresh eyes and buoyed by fellow travellers, we delve deeper and are more open to opportunities

I had a 'Yes Man' year prior to my yearlong EuroTrip in 2011. Aided by the irregular hours of my new job I was able to experience my hometown of Sydney through a new perspective. During this time I navigated through several scenes, from spoken word, punk rock, comedy, art and hip hop.

I've been to my fair share of shows at interesting spaces and squats from my time in punk rock. This bunker party by Chowder Bay was my first in the electronic scene. This night affirmed what I'd always believed about Sydney. It might not stay out as late or have the reputed party scene as the other global capitals but there's more than meets the eye.

This night was interesting because of what I didn't do.
A yacht was docked close to the shore and several partygoers had swum onboard and reported the occupants were quite accommodating. It sounded like a crazy enough adventure to go on but I hesitated. My running mate and I had discussed the foolishness of risk-taking behaviour on the drive in, this certainly qualified. I'm also not that great a swimmer.

This missed opportunity and the topic of FOMO [fear of missing out] plagued me for weeks. I transcribed some great insight from writer Mike White who talked about it on Marc Maron's WTF podcast. It came up again in a podcast conversation I had with a yoga instructor.
Actor, Writer and Traveler Mike White speaks to Marc Maron about adventure
MIKE WHITE: (36m 20s mark) I've gone through this period where when I'm invited to do something random I just do it because I feel "I should do that". And after a while -- I recently read a book about fetishising, this thing we feel where we need to have experiences. Its a Buddhist-- at some point you can let go of "missing out on things"

CouchSurfing has always been a hit or miss affair for me. That said, many of my more memorable and obscure experiences have been through the hospitality exchange network. After returning from my EuroTrip I connected with a ragtag group of CSers to do some urbex [urban exploration] around the coastline of Sydney.

One of the CSers had recently returned from several years teaching English in Japan. Through further conversation we discovered that she was a running mate of my cousin who had been teaching english himself in rural Japan. That night I attended a joint birthday party celebrated by a CSer I had interviewed for my podcast.

The best part of the outing was the imagination we injected into the experience. It was like a quest, we each got to display our specific attributes of height, balance and flexibility to progress. We pretended people in the distance were our future selves and that the island was inhabited by dinosaurs.

Day 279 - 287: Birmingham + Nottingham, England
One of the best things about being in transit is that you're light on the ground. When you're in motion and not burdened by routine you can act on a whim and decide to go places at the drop of a hat. Its what brought me to Birmingham and Nottingham at such short notice.

Lomography in Köln, Germany

Lomo photos featured in my 'Memento Year' exhibition
Are you looking for something new to try? Interested in spicing up your sightseeing? Why not give Lomography a shot.

Lomography is lo-fi photography based out of Austria supported by a community of enthusiasts around the world. I found LOMO posters around the art district in Porto and shopfronts in Germany.

I signed up for an introductory lesson from the LOMO store by Ehrenstraße then created a Couchsurfing event inviting people to join. I encouraged my current and previous CS host as well as a German friend I'd unexpectedly reconnected with to take the workshop and walking tour. It was a novel way of seeing the city, spend time with friends whilst making new ones along the way.

Chillin at Die Wohngemeinschaft (Share House) Bar
Afterwards we enjoyed gourmet burgers at Hans im Glück and cool drinks at Die Wohngemeinschaft. We were invited to a CSer's loft for a modern German Christmas experience. We baked customised apples, internet-streamed Christmas songs and sampled the imported winning Christmas cake from our host's Bavarian hometown. One of the many memorable days I had in Cologne, Germany.

This was the camera loaned to me for the LOMO tour.
Not a high end one but more than makes up for it in Style points.

Memento Spotlight: Conversation doodles from Firenze, Italy

A Memento Year Exhibition - 'Anatomy of a Conversation'
Over Christmas in Hamburg I had the pleasure of presenting an exhibition at the art gallery I was sleeping at. I had met a German artist earlier that year in Venice, he extended an invitation for me to crash at his artist commune and put on a show. I took him up on the offer 10 months later and presented all I could, the artefacts and memories I'd accumulated on my trip. These spotlights will showcase those mementos and detail the stories behind them.

Day 22: Firenze, Italy
I only stayed 2 days in Florence, Italy. It was early into my year abroad and I was still developing my style of travel. At this stage I was traveling quickly and hadn't yet decided on staying a month in each country. I had also organised some hostel work for my return to Venezia the following week for Carnevale so I was on a tight schedule.

Home Music: Songs to be happy to (First impressions, Last show)

My farewell music Soundtrack was titled 'Last time, First lines' so its fitting I herald my return home with first impressions. Its with sad news that I farewell 'Thursday' as they perform their final dates. I reminisced about Sage Francis as I watched him at his final Sydney show. I hope to pay the same tribute for one of my favourite bands but unfortunately the price is too steep, especially for a return traveler as broke as myself.

In fact that has sadly been the glaring impression upon returning to Sydney, how expensive things are and how much cost of living has risen. I won't fall into the trap of idealism and "good old days" revisionism however. If travel has taught me anything its that we have to face and negotiate around the reality presented to us.

Thursday will be supported by another of my favourite bands, 'Saves the Day'. I've seen both bands before so I have no overwhelming regret. I've devoted my ears to podcasts the last few years, rarely listening to music or going to shows. It would have been good to pay my respects to the band but I shall instead offer it with this heartfelt post. I hope you can *Pay* the respects for me.

Thursday are performing two dates in Australia

Thank You (press release excerpt)
Well, if you’ve been touched by our music or our dedication or our embarrassingly out-of-fashion sincerity, then this is for you, friend: thank you for letting us make No Devolución. We hope you’ve heard it. We say “beg, borrow or steal… music is an idea… ideas are free” but we encourage you to support our fantastically sweet and hardworking label, Epitaph, by buying it if you can afford to.

Despite the fantastic year that the band has enjoyed, creatively, things haven’t been as easy for us on a personal level... We haven’t had any falling out and are all still close...

Underneath it all, the personal circumstances involved make it impossible to continue Thursday in the spirit that has made it special. So, we stop. For now, at least.

Home Reads: 'My Father’s Brain' by Jonathan Franzen

My Father’s Brain by Jonathan Franzen
(New Yorker Magazine - September 10, 2001)
According to the latest theories, which are based on a wealth of neurological and psychological research in the last few decades, the brain is not an album in which memories are stored discretely like unchanging photographs. Instead, a memory is, in the phrase of the psychologist Daniel L. Schacter, a "temporary constellation" of activity-a necessarily approximate excitation of neural circuits that bind a set of sensory images and semantic data into the momentary sensation of a remembered whole… The human brain is a web of a hundred billion neurons, maybe as many as two hundred billion, with trillions of axons and dendrites exchanging quadrillions of messages by way of at least fifty different chemical transmitters. The organ with which we observe and make sense of the universe is, by a comfortable margin, the most complex object we know of in that universe. And yet it’s also a lump of meat

Home Music: Sage Francis and Buck 65 (2002 and 2010)

In early 2000, I regularly went to punk rock shows. Starting with bigger international acts then exploring the local underground hardcore shows. Halfway through this time I transitioned into exploring underground hiphop after bumping into a school mate at a party who had been around that scene.

Sage Francis @Hopetoun Hotel was the first underground Hiphop show that started my affair with that scene. Months later Buck 65 @Basement would go down as my 2nd favourite Hiphop gig of all time.

Fast forward to 2010 almost 8 years later and both artists have returned to Sydney. Both shows from 2002 hold a sentimental place in my heart. Many friends who I regularly went to gigs with stopped going to shows. Like myself they would be attending these upcoming shows and reviving forgotten habits. For the most part these friends remain in my life but spending time with them in this context is a distant memory. It is a reunion of sorts. Coming full circle.

For this I post, I had hoped that the almighty Google would help me with the original dates of the Sage and Buck nights. Maybe a blog posting or a review of that evening. Photos, flyer art. Anything! But alas no luck. I wanted to see a memento of those nights and juxtapose them with these recent memories many years on - "Before and After" shots. I guess you're supposed to capture them yourselves, as the old saying goes "If you want something done right...".

I guess my mood in regards to this can be summed up by the latest Sage Francis clip - particularly the imagery with the coffin...

Home Movies: 'Before Sunrise' - "I've never been anywhere" quote

Jesse: I know what you mean about wishing somebody wasn't there, though. It's just usually it's myself that I wish I could get away from. Seriously, think about this. I have never been anywhere that I haven't been. I've never had a kiss when I wasn't one of the kissers. Y'know, I've never, um, gone to the movies, when I wasn't there in the audience. I've never been out bowling, if I wasn't there, y'know making some stupid joke. I think that's why so many people hate themselves. Seriously, it's just they are sick to death of being around themselves.
I'd be lying if I told you this wasn't the main driver for wanting to 'Ego Trip'

VIDEO: Before Sunrise - Original Trailer

Starring: Ethan Hawke,Julie Delpy. Directed by Richard Linklater
Jesse: Let's say that you and I were together all the time, then you'd start to hate a lot of my mannerisms. The way every time we would have people over, uh, I'd be insecure, and I'd get a little too drunk. Or, uh, the way I'd tell the same stupid pseudo-intellectual story again, and again. Y'see, I've heard all those stories. So of course I'm sick of myself. But being with you, uh, it's made me feel like I'm somebody else.
